Happy Chinese New Year!!! Cheers to the year of the dog!

About the work

I may not be of Chinese decent (at least none that I know of), however, I love celebrating the holiday and ringing in a new lunar year and zodiac animal. Since 2018 is the year of the dog, I knew I had to toss my own mutts into the mix! I tried to replicate Chinese painting techniques and methods to create this ink and watercolour illustration. I don’t think I succeeded in anything that looks remotely authentic, however, I still love how it turned out. I mega-focused having the polarizing personalities of my dogs speak through the image. The big one, Matilda, is a mostly happy go lucky dog. The small one, Maggie, is a spit fire who’s hates most things and people. While I love my dog equally, I think I like Maggie’s sour depiction in this artwork the most. I find it perfectly depicts how she’s so cute and has a charmingly curly tail, that balances out “I’m going to bite you” bad attitude.
