A jewel toned Hummingbird on the hunt for flowers’ nectar.
About the work
A companion piece to “Chubby Cardinal,” this acrylic painting was done on the same kind of magnet backed canvas board. Like the cardinal bird painting before it, this canvas also came pre-printed with hummingbird line art. Even though I kept the subject matter, I did not make use of the line art, and instead free handed the image. Choosing the bird’s colouring was not simple, as I had a hard time trying to decided among the various colour combinations of real life hummingbirds. I used my favorite colour as a tie breaker, and went with dark jewel toned purples, blues, and greens. Capturing the iridescent nature of their feathers in the light was my main focus while painting this work.
The original hangs in a private collection.
