Description

Also known as the Mexican red-legged tarantula, these arachnids are fuzzy and docile in nature. They are sometimes kept as pets, however, sometimes it’s best to leave nature where it is and enjoy a painting instead. :]

About the work

As a follow up to Morpho peledies Butterfly, this painting was also painted on a 3 x 3 inch canvas board. My decision to paint a tarantula was made based upon my opinion that artwork of butterflies is pretty common place. I think tarantulas are mega-cool, but I don’t notice them in artwork nearly as much as butterflies. I chose the Brachypelm emilia due to its bold colouring. The stereotypical, all black tarantulas are my favorite, however, I thought the red-legged tarantula would be more interesting to paint. I didn’t want to use colours to feminize the subject, so instead, I chose a neutral tan/sand colour for the back ground that is accented with metallic gold splotches.
